THE WATERWAY - AS IT IS TODAY

The waterways route is today a mix of minor streams, dry or neglected channels that are overgrown, silted up and a shadow of their former selves. The parts that run through the town centre have also become a focus for litter and vandalism.

York Stream (dry) passing under the railway embankment

York Stream and the connecting waterway channels are today heavily silted up and overgrown, yet they still possess some impressive bridges built in the days when the stream was navigable. Above we see part of the four arch brick built bridge where York Stream runs under the main GWR railway line and down to Stafferton Way.

The dry Flood Relief Channel

This part of the Maidenhead Flood Relief Channel above the old A4 Bath Road (Bridge Street) is an almost permanently dry ditch, and virtually redundant in terms of flood protection due to the construction of the Jubilee River to the east of both the town and the main river.

Should you or your organisation be interested in working with us to tackle the current neglected stream(s) and to help make our vision of a navigable channel through the town a reality, please contact us.
